Gold and enamel hunting cased watch by Hauser Zivy & Cie.
–
A very fine and rare Mexican gold and enamel hunting cased keyless two train minute repeating grande and petite sonnerie clock watch with chronograph, perpetual calendar, and moon phases, circa 1894. Made for Sor. Dn. Fernando de Teresa. The damascened nickel movement features a highly jewelled two train, a lever escapement, a bimetallic compensation balance, and a partially visible chronograph mechanism through the backplate. The white enamel dial displays Arabic numerals, an outer track for minutes and chronograph seconds calibrated for 300 units, gold filigree hands, including a central chronograph seconds hand, and four sunken subsidiary dials: one for the date, another for seconds combined with a moon phase aperture, a third for the day, and a fourth for the month combined with the leap year cycle.

The 18 carat gold case is richly decorated, with covers and band intricately chased and engraved with tightly arranged scrolls. The gold bow is similarly adorned. The front cover features the monogram F.T. in red and blue translucent enamel, while the back showcases the year 1894, decorated ensuite with the monogram. The band incorporates a short slide for trip repetition, a pusher for the chronograph, and a lever for the handset located beneath the bezel at 4 o’clock. Additional short slides beneath the bezel allow manual adjustments for the day, month, date, and moon phases. The polished gold cuvette is engraved with movement details and a dedication: Fabricado especialmente para el Sor. Dn. Fernando de Teresa, Mexico. It also includes further slides for sonnerie/silence and grande/petite sonnerie. The covers, cuvette, and pendant bear Swiss hallmarks, and the covers and cuvette are numbered 1894.

Movement is running. The chronograph is non functional; the push button presses but does not activate it. The repeating function works well, with strong hour chimes, though the quarter and minute chimes are weak and tinny, needing adjustment. All calendar functions advance correctly, and the manual adjusters work at cataloguing. The dial has a faint scratch from the month sub dial to just above 1 o’clock, likely a scratch rather than a crack due to its faintness. Another faint scratch is on the top left side. Otherwise, the dial is in good condition. The case is also good, featuring well defined engravings, though minor scratches are visible on the enamel monogram and date, plus small scratches around the inner bezels’ polished surfaces.

Hauser Zivy & Cie. was a leading jewellery and watch retailer in Mexico City in the late 19th century. Founded by Mr. Hauser and Mr. Zivy, the company had boutiques in Paris and Mexico, selling high quality musical boxes and luxury items. Their reputation grew through partnerships, notably with Baccarat. Girard-Perregaux named its chronometer watch, featuring a tourbillon escapement and three bridges, ‘La Esmeralda’, in honour of their atelier. Today, their building is a historical landmark in Mexico City, showcasing European influence on 19th-century Mexican architecture.
