Gold open faced Lady’s pendant watch

An English 18 carat yellow gold open faced keyless lever pendant watch made by John Poole  London, circa 1874. An engine turned caseback with in the center a circel, fluted case band. The case is made by PW, probably Philip Woodman & Sons, London, Master case maker registered in June 1857, August 1871 and March 1872; London letter date for 1874. A white enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6 and yellow gold Pear hands. A gilt brass, ¾ plate movement, going barrel, lateral lever escapement, monometallic balance and blued steel flat hairspring, polished steel index regulator. The dial and movement are signed.

Poole, John (1818-1867)
Established himself as a chronometer maker in 1840, he invented an auxiliary compensation, which was very simple to make. He received a Gold Medal in Paris in 1867, the year he died by suicide. His brother James worked with him, taking over in 1867, and later moving to 33, Spencer Street, Clerkenwell. J.U. Poole, James’s son, continued the business.
