Half hunter with 18k gold movement by Joseph White & Son

A rare and heavy gold half hunter keyless lever pocket watch with an 18k gold movement and white gold bezel, circa 1920. This watch has an 18k gold movement with a decoratively engraved hob-nail patterned finish on the plates, lever escapement, bimetallic compensation balance, diamond endstone, and a backplate hallmarked London 1920. It is signed and numbered: Joseph White & Son, Coventry. The Willis-type cream enamel dial features Roman numerals and blued steel hands, with the hour hand having a double taper. Additionally, it includes a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute ring. Dial also signed: Joseph White & Son, Coventry. The 18k gold case has polished covers and an engraved monogram on the back, along with a white gold bezel with blue enamel Roman numerals and an inner minute ring. It also has a pusher for the handset with protective shoulders. The plain polished gold cuvette, case front, back, cuvette, and pendant are all marked with the maker’s mark FT for Fred Thoms and hallmarked London, 1920. It comes with a gold curb link chain marked 15 and a metal clip.

Joseph White and Son were manufacturers of deck watches for the admiralty, located near Coventry, England. Another notable watch by White, with a movement made of 18k gold and bearing the serial number 39727, is also known. The movement of this earlier watch is hallmarked 1912 and was previously part of the collection of Seth Atwood in Rockford, Illinois, as well as the Time Museum. It was sold at Sotheby’s on December 1986.
