A rare, extremely early German pocket watch with a manual astronomical calendar, eight displays, and signs of the Zodiac, circa 1760. 18K gold, Louis XV quality case with maker’s mark AIG, No. 2421. Back with two rotating discs with a total of five apertures and two scales, underneath the triple calendar, showing the month with the length of the month and zodiac sign, date, day of the week with a corresponding zodiac sign, and length of night and length of the day. White enamel Louis XV-style dial with Roman radial hours, outer minutes track with Arabic five minutes numerals, aperture for winding, and gold filigree hands. Gilded full plate movement, verge escapement, decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, square baluster pillars, fusee and chain, and signed Hentschel à Strasbourg.

Johann-Jacob Hentschel (Hentzschell) was born in Darmstadt; he was in Basel in 1745 and Strasbourg in Alsace from 1759 until around 1785. He was married in Strasbourg to Maria Magdalena Heus.
