In 1899, Dr. Charles Edouard Guillaume noticed that steel with an addition of 44.4% nickel had a negative square coefficient of thermal expansion. It resulted in the development of a new type of balance mostly used for time contest or observatory watches so called the Guillaume Balance.
The present example was therefore most probably destined for time contest with its Extra quality movement and Guillaume balance before being delivered to the US market.
