A Swiss 18 carat gold open faced pocket watch made by Patek Philippe in Geneva, circa 1958. The nickel lever movement is stamped twice with the seal of Geneva and fitted with 18 jewels. Reprinted dial with Arabic hour numerals, outer minute divisions, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and blued steel Breguet hands, customized with the signature of James. S. Copley. The hinged case back centred with a blue enamelled monogram. Case, dial and movement signed. Comes with an Extract from the Archives confirming its sale on June 12th, 1964.

The signature on the dial of this watch is that of James Strohn Copley (1916-1973), an American newspaper magnate. Copley Press published many newspapers throughout the country, most famously the San Diego Union-Tribune. James S. Copley was an avid collector of rare books and manuscripts and formed the library bearing his name in 1966.
