Commemoration watch of generalisimo Don José de San Martin

A Swiss 18 carat gold and enamel hunting cased watch in commemoration of generalisimo Don José de San Martin and the centenial anniversary of Peruvian independence, circa 1921. Retailed by G. Welsch Y Cia, Lima. Nickel lever movement, bimetallic compensation balance, with cam wheel regulation, 17 jewels. Gold cuvette. White enamel dial, Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds and blued steel moon style hands. The case centered by a polychrome enamel standing portrait of General Don José De San Martin surrounded by an embossed inscription ‘Generalissimo Don José de San Martin’. The reverse engraved with the inscription ‘Ier Centenario de la Indepencia del Peru Lima 28 de Julio 1921’, centered by raised engraved arms of Peru, further engraved ‘Huguenin’ for case engraver’s signature.

Don José de San Martin (1778-1850) was an Argentine general who played a large part in winning South America’s independence from the Spanish Empire. José de San Martin is regarded as a national hero of Argentina and Peru and considered one of the main liberators of Spanish South America. The Order of the Liberator General San Martin was created in his honor and is one of the highest decorations conferred by the Argentine government.
