An English 18 carat gold open faced keyless pocket watch made by Lister & Sons in Newcastle-On-Tyne, circa 1890. The movement with a Swiss lever escapement. Opalescent, sunray engine turned enamel dial with Arabic hour numerals, outer dot minute divisions and open work hands, a vacant cartouche in the lower half at 6 o’clock. A case with plain bezels, pendant and bow, a reeded band and a sunray engine turned back with another blank cartouche. Cuvette signed, case numbered and signed CCE Fres.

Lister & Sons was founded in 1821 by William Lister I, born in 1776 and died in 1868. He was active as a silversmith from 1820 at 33 Mosley Street in Newcastle. William entered into a partnership with his son, Clement, in 1838. In 1840, another son, William II, joined the company, and by 1916, the firm was named Lister & Sons Ltd.

They were known as goldsmiths, jewellers, watch and clock makers, dealers in antique silver, and in 1863, Lister & Sons also advertised as manufacturers of electro plated forks and spoons in plain and ornamental patterns.

The company was known to be active at various addresses in Newcastle-on-Tyne, viz St. Thomas’s Place, until 1913 at 9 Grey Street and from 1913 at 32 & 34 Northumberland Street with a manufactory at 16 & 17 Mosley Street.

In 1931, Lister & Sons Ltd merged with Grant & Son and Gowland & Grant (the Gowlands were related to the Listers).

The company was represented at the 1851 London Great Exhibition and at the 1862 International Exhibition.

Their silver hallmarks were registered at the Newcastle (1821), Sheffield (1895), Birmingham (1932), London (1851, 1895) and Chester (1929) assay offices.
