Gold hunting cased keyless lever watch
–
A fine Swiss 14 carat yellow gold full hunter pocket watch made under Loehr’s Patent, circa 1900. It has a mechanical crown winding movement with a lever escapement, signed Loehr’s Patent Déposée. The white dial features black Roman numerals for the hours, a fine outer minute track, and sleek blued steel spade hands. The timepiece is housed in an unusual rounded rectangular three body, 14 carat solid yellow gold full hunter case. Both sides of the case are meticulously embellished with chased bird and floral decoration. It features a fluted winding crown, a sturdy decorative suspension bow, a solid 14 carat gold inner protective cuvette, and is signed Loehr’s Patent Déposée. The interior of the polished reverse back cover shows a fine engine turned perlage finish.

August von Loehr was a celebrated Austrian engineer and inventor who secured pioneering patents in the late 19th century for specialized watch mechanisms. He is best known for early perpetual self winding pocket watches driven by an internal pedometer weight. The firm’s stamped patents (Patent Déposée) were also used on distinctive custom luxury commissions around 1900. These rarer timepieces departed from traditional circular forms, adopting elegantly stylized rounded rectangular cases decorated with wildlife and floral relief work. The inner lid (cuvette) often featured a glass display window showcasing the mechanical workings and bridging ingenuity, practical inspection, and Art Nouveau aesthetics.
