Deck chronometer in mahogany box by Paul Ditisheim
–
Rare Swiss marine chronometer with 56h power reserve, circa 1900. This watch is presented in a beautiful mahogany deck box. It boasts a silver-plated dial with Roman radial hour markers, outer minute markers, a subsidiary second dial, a 56-hour power reserve display, and spade-shaped hands. The brass movement is equipped with an ebauche Victor Kullberg, chain/fusee, spring detent escapement as per Thomas Earnshaw, and bimetallic Guillaume chronometer balance, making it suitable for a ship’s chronometer with four screws and four weights. It comes with an extract from Andreas Hidding’s chronometer database. This chronometer also took part in the 1908 competition in Neuchâtel, regulated by Bourquin.

Paul Ditisheim (1868-1945) was a renowned Swiss watch and chronometer maker who specialized in precision time measurement. After completing his training at the watchmaking school in La Chaux-de-Fonds, he worked in various cities such as Ponts-de-Martel, Berlin, Paris, and Coventry. In 1892, he established his own watch factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, which became highly successful and won numerous first prizes in various competitions. While his impressive deck watches are frequently found in the market, his ship’s chronometers, which often come with certificates from the chronometer competitions, can fetch high prices. This chronometer even participated in the 1908 competition in Neuchâtel, where it was regulated by Bourquin.
