Genève (Geneva Ball) watches were popular spherical pendant timepieces made in Geneva, Switzerland, around the turn of the twentieth century. Designed to be worn as decorative jewellery pendants or on a chatelaine, these compact timepieces had hinged spherical gold cases that opened to reveal a miniature watch, combining fine Swiss miniaturized horology with ornate gem set goldsmithing.

Qty Boutte stands for Quality Boutte, a high grade trademark and quality stamp used by the Swiss watchmaker J.F. Boutte (Jean-François Boutte) based in Geneva. Active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the firm specialized in finely finished miniature timepieces and luxury jewellery watches for an elite international market. The inscription Qty on the dust cover served as a commercial guarantee of superior mechanical craftsmanship, complementing the complex miniaturized engineering required for specialized objects like Boule de Genève.
