Hunting cased watch for the South-American market by Ulysse Nardin

A very fine, extraordinary large, Swiss minute repeating hunting cased pocket watch with a chronograph for the South-American market, circa 1900.
18 carat pink gold, engine turned, monogrammed, à goutte case with pusher for chronograph at “12”, slide for repeating mechanism and numbered and signed gold dome with presentation engraving: La Fraternidad Maquinistas y Foguistas del F.C.S. al Senor J. P. Marcilese. Signed enamel dial with Arabic numerals, auxiliary seconds, centre chronograph and blued spade hands. Rhodium-plated bridge movement with Geneva Striping decoration, very finely ground and bevelled chronograph steel parts, ratchet wheel, two hammers, two gongs, wolfteeth winding wheels and screw compensation balance.

Swiss watchmaker, Ulysse Nardin was born on January 22nd, 1823 as the son of the watchmaker Nardin, Léonard Frédéric. In 1846 he founded the Ulysse Nardin watch factory in Le Locle, Switzerland. He was trained by his father and completed his apprenticeship with Frédéric William Dubois and Louis JeanRichard-dit-Bressel.
On June 19, 1847, Ulysse was named Cécile Perret (1815-1856) . From this marriage 4 children were born, 3 girls and a son. Cécile Perret died at the age of only 41, Paul David Nardin is then one year old. Ulysee then married Fanny Julie Veuve (1832-1900) on June 22, 1859.
Ulysse Nardin died unexpectedly on February 20, 1876, his son Paul David, 21 years old, took over the management of the company.
