Large pocket watch with Punchinello and Father Time
–
An exquisite, large pocket watch “Punchinello” and “Father Time” with repeater and figure automaton with four automatons, made by Piaget in La Côte-aux-Fées, Switzerland, circa 1820. This pocket watch features a large, open faced glazed case made from 18 Carat rose gold, exuding elegance and sophistication. The coin edge detailing adds a touch of refinement to the overall design. The dial, a focal point of this remarkable timepiece, showcases an enamel outer ring adorned with Arabic numerals, providing a clear and legible display of the hours.
The dial has a figure automaton that takes centre stage, featuring four intricately crafted figures. The figure automaton includes a normal Jacquemart, responsible for striking the quarter hours, executed by two angel figures. As the quarter hours approach, these angelic figures come to life, creating a visual spectacle that is both enchanting and awe inspiring. Adding to the allure of this timepiece is the presence of “Punchinello”, a beloved character from traditional Italian commedia dell’arte. Punchinello appears in the upper window of the figure automaton and playfully interacts with “Father Time.” With a mischievous charm, Punchinello strikes the scythe of Father Time, symbolizing the passage of time itself. This whimsical touch adds a unique and playful element to an otherwise sophisticated and intricate design. The dial is further enhanced by Breguet steel hands, which provide precise timekeeping and complement the overall aesthetic of the watch. Every detail has been meticulously considered and executed to perfection.
The movement of this pocket watch features an early cylinder escapement and boasts an hour and quarter hour repeater, allowing the wearer to audibly hear the time at a moment’s notice.
The case, dust cover and movement of this exceptional timepiece bear matching numbers, further attesting to its authenticity and movement and dust cover are signed.

The execution of this machine with four figures and the depiction of “Punchinello and Father Time” is extremely rare, only five other copies are known. With the “Piaget” signature, it is the only example known. In the “normal version” this automaton also strikes Punchinello on a bell and not on Father Time’s scythe.
