Gold open faced pocket watch by Eduard Koehn
–
A very fine and rare Swiss minute repeating gentleman’s pocket watch with split seconds chronograph, circa 1900. This timepiece features a keyless winding, jewelled lever movement that repeats on two gongs. It has a white enamel dial with Arabic numerals indicating the hours, an outer track for minutes and seconds marked with red Arabic numerals every five minutes, a subsidiary seconds dial, a 60 minute counter, a split seconds chronograph, and spade hands. The case is made from 18 carat gold with an à goutte design, featuring an engraved monogram and a cuvette that bears additional engraving. The dial is signed by Ed Koehn, the movement is signed by H.R. Ekegren, and the cuvette is inscribed with the name Harry Burnett, dated 1909.

The movement is running well, and both the chronograph and repeating functions are operating in phase. The case is in good overall condition—clear and visible—but the inside back has some rubbing marks. The hinge of the cuvette is not securely attached, causing the cuvette to detach when opened. The dial is in fair condition, with some very fine hairline scratches visible within the subsidiary dial at 12 o’clock. Additionally, there are some pits and surface marks that are noticeable to the naked eye throughout.

Edouard Koehn (1839-1908) was born in Germany and studied at the horological school in Geneva. He started his career as a simple repairman at Patek Philippe and eventually became a partner in the company. In 1891, Edouard Koehn acquired the company H.R. Ekegren. The high level of quality awareness that he developed during his years at Patek Philippe is evident in his own designs and works.
