Unsigned gold, enamel, and pearl set pocket watch
–
A Swiss gold, enamel, and pearl set quarter repeating musical watch made for the Chinese market, so called The Offering, circa 1820. This watch features a gilded movement with a cylinder escapement and a plain three arm balance. It includes hanging barrels for both the timekeeping and music mechanisms, with the music played via a pinned barrel and a comb of 33 screwed tines. The gilded cuvette has winding apertures and indicators for the music and timekeeping trains. The white enamel dial showcases Roman numerals and an outer Arabic minute ring.
–
The gold case is adorned with a polychrome enamel scene depicting an offering, surrounded by a red flinqué enamel border. The bezels are decorated with blue guilloché enamel and set with graduated split pearls, while an opaque light blue enamel band features a repeated gold geometric pattern. The case back bears an indistinct maker’s mark, likely DB within a lozenge shaped cartouche, attributed to Dupont & Bonnet.

The movement is not functioning, and the music is not playing. The repeating mechanism is operational. The dial has hairline cracks. The enamel panel has been removed and reset into the case at some point, leaving glue residue on the blue guilloché enamel of the back bezel, which complicates assessing the overall condition of the bezel underneath. There are some chips in the light blue enamel of the case band and a small chip in the blue enamel of the front bezel above the 2 o’clock position.
–
The enamel on the case back seems inspired by a scene titled ‘The Offering to Minerva’. However, instead of a statue of Minerva, this watch features a vase of roses. A similar watch, with a decorative pearl border and nearly identical scene but featuring the statue of Minerva, is housed at the L.A. Mayer Museum in Jerusalem.
