Pink gold open faced verge watch probably by Louis Robert

A rare and very large Swiss 18 carat pink gold open faced quarter repeating pocket watch with figured Jacquemart automaton, Africa, circa 1820. Very fine decorated fire gilt verge movement, engraved barrel bridge, blued regulating disc, repeating the hours and quarter hours. Small, central white enamel dial on the front with Arabic hours, outer minute divisions and probably original hands framed by light blue enamel with applied multi-coloured gold decoration, a rare figure automaton with two African warriors and a lion, the back engraved showing a fountain, rare cord-like band, punched H & D.

The design of the automaton ‘Africa’ is very rare among the Jacquemart figure automatons. One of the manufacturers was Louis Robert à Genève.
