Gold and enamel lever watch by Wegelin Fils

An ultra-thin Swiss 18 carat gold and enamel open faced pocket watch made for the Chinese Market, circa 1920. High-quality bridge movement, stamped with two Geneva seals, gold screwed compensation balance. Gilt dial with Arabic hours and outer minute divisions, sunken auxiliary seconds, Breguet hands. The case back and bezel are elaborately decorated with polychrome champlevé enamel flowers on a black ground in imitation of Chinese cloisonné enamel, crown set with a sapphire cabochon. Dial signed.

The Wegelin jewellery and watch shop was opened in 1911 on Rue de Bonne 12, Grenoble, France. The sons of the company founder, Arnold and Henri, took over the business. Henri Wegelin founded a jewellery workshop in Lyon in 1920. Shortly afterwards, a watch shop was opened in Geneva.
