Gold pair cased repoussé pocket watch
–
A gold unsigned pair cased repoussé verge pocket watch with chatelaine, fob seal, key, and associated inner case and movement, circa 1765. This watch showcases a gilded full-plate movement with verge escapement, a balance bridge adorned with symmetrically arranged foliate motifs, a diamond endstone, cylindrical pillars, a flat balance, and a fusee and chain. It is signed by Wm. Matthews, London. The enamel dial features Roman numerals, blued steel hands, and an outer minute ring.
–
The watch has a plain gold inner case with an aperture for winding to the back, a stirrup pendant, and a bow, but it lacks a front bezel and glass. The case is marked TC, possibly for Thomas Carpenter, and numbered 9778. It also features a gold repoussé outer case with a scene depicting Orpheus and Eurydice. The border and bezels are chased and engraved with shells, scrollwork, and flowers, and the bezel is similarly decorated.
–
The chatelaine is made of yellow gold and gilt metal, featuring panels depicting classical figures connected by pendant chains. The upper gilt metal panel has short pendant chains that end in a blank bloodstone fob seal and key.

The inner case has a depression in the band and is missing the front bezel and glass, which have been removed to enable the inner case to fit into the outer repousse. The inner case fits snugly and well into the outer case. The repoussé scene shows some rubbing to the most exposed areas, but overall, the scene and decorative scheme remain clear. The thumbpiece is indented. The chatelaine has scuffs, scratches, and some rubbing on the scenes. The uppermost panel with the pendant hook is made of gilt metal, while the lower panels are of yellow metal. The pendant chains and seals appear to be a combination of yellow metal and gilt metal. The movement is running.
