Rock crystal crucifix-form watch by Friderich Hübner

A German rock crystal crucifix-shaped one-handed Renaissance pendant watch, circa 1640. Cruciform brass full plate movement, verge escapement, applied floral decorations, chain and fusee, two-arm steel balance without spring, florally engraved pierced balance cock. The plain silver cross on the front incorporated a small dial with radial Roman hours and a single hand in the upper part. The case is in the form of a crucifix with folding bevelled rock crystal parts mounted in a fire gilt, carved brass frame, the sides are silvered and intricately florally engraved. Movement signed.

Friderich Hübner was active in the first half of the 17th century and is considered one of the earliest makers in Bremen, Germany. He died on October 8th, 1648, two weeks before the Peace of Westphalia signalled the end of the Thirty Years War. Some other known pieces made in his workshop are for example a rock crystal horizontal clock and a silver oval pendant watch.
