An early and rare English silver pair-cased verge clock watch with sun and moon dial, circa 1700. Full plate movement, verge escapement, chain and fusee, three-arm iron balance. Silver champlevé dial with retrograde Roman hours for night and day indication, Arabic five-minute numerals, the upper half of the centre with a semi-circular aperture showing the phases of the sun on an engraved gold sun disc or the moon phases on an engraved silver moon and inlaid stars on a blued disc which revolves once every 24 hours when the sun disappears on the right side of the display, the moon appears on the left, the lower half of the dial is decorated with chased flower scrolls and heads of fantasy birds. The outer case with engraving W.J.G. 1632 on the back, and the plain inner case with case maker’s mark TM. Dial signed Thomas Carter, and movement signed Tho. Carter London.
