An ornamental French gilt, enamel and paste stone set open faced Louis XVI verge pocket watch, circa 1785. Full plate movement, verge escapement, chain and fusee, three arm brass balance. White enamel dial with Roman hours, an outer minute track with Arabic quarter hour numerals, pierced and gemstone set hands. The bezel on the front is decorated with paste stones, on the case back a high oval medallion set with paste stones and a polychrome enamel painting of a period gallant scene, lavishly ornamented flower tendril decoration underneath in a background of dark blue enamel, maker’s signature Leton inside the back lid.
Dial signed, case numbered, movement signed and numbered, case and movement with matching numbers.

Jean-Pierre Gregson originally came from England. In 1776 he was appointed watchmaker to the king in Paris. He was one of the first watchmakers of his time to use the Lépine calibre. In 1787 Gregson founded a watch company in Braille.
