A fine French 18 carat gold open faced quarter repeating lever pocket watch, circa 1864. Sold to Monsieur Ch. Duverdy on March 17th, 1864 for 1200 Francs. Bridge movement, high-quality lever escapement with ruby pallets and a moustache counterpoised lever, key wind, two hammers, two gongs, bimetallic temperature compensation balance with gold adjustment screws, Breguet balance spring and a repeater movement which is released through a slider on the case. White enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute divisions and sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock. Engine-turned case back. Cuvette numbered, signed Breguet and inscribed CH. D. for Charles Denis Duverdy, case and movement numbered. Comes with the original morocco presentation box and the original ratchet key.

This superior pocket watch is a fine example of a Breguet timepiece dating from the second half of the 19th century.

Charles Denis Duverdy (1829-1898) was a legal practitioner at the imperial court in Paris and a doctor of jurisprudence. He wrote many legal papers and in 1863 he was appointed mayor of Maisons-sur-Seine, which was renamed to Maisons-Laffitte in 1882. Duverdy held the position until 1870.
