Silver open faced chronometer by Augustus Ericsson

A very fine English/Russian open faced 30 hour power reserve chronometer, circa 1896. Full plate movement, an ébauche by Victor Kullberg, chain and fusee, a spring detent chronometer escapement according to Thomas Earnshaw, heavy gold screw chronometer balance and a blued free swinging cylindrical balance spring. White enamel dial with Roman hours, an outer minute track, sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock, a power reserve indicator at 12 and blued spade & whip hands. A plain extra heavy silver case with gold hinges, makers mark FT for Frederick Thoms, the back engraved BTON 32-19710. Dial and movement signed and numbered, case numbered. Comes with a wooden box.

As for the engraving BTON 32-19710 on the back cover, it can only be assumed that it is an observatory designation, as is also found on pocket chronometer No. 483 by Ericsson, which has BTON 43-16780 engraved on the back cover, as well as on pocket chronometer No. 62 by Victor Pihl, St. Petersburg, which has the engraving BTON 186- 22103.

August Ericsson was a respected Swedish watchmaker and dealer based in St. Petersburg from 1865. Ericsson only used the highest quality movements such as Ulysse Nardin, IWC, Longines and even Victor Kullberg for his pocket watches and marine chronometers. Among other things, he delivered watches to the Tsarist family and the Russian Navy. Ericsson died in 1915.
