An alliance coat of arms is the representation of two coats of arms whose bearers (people, countries, princes or dioceses) are connected through an alliance, usually through marriage, less often through a personal union. These have been known since the end of the 13th century. The alliance coat of arms of married couples is a symbol of the marital connection and therefore also an identification of the relevant generation within the family.
