An extremely rare French 18K gold open faced verge pocket watch with date and automaton, circa 1800. Full plate movement, verge escapement, chain and fusee, three-arm brass balance. White enamel dial with in the upper part a polychrome enamel scene including an automaton depicting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, the serpent in the aperture, which revolves every second, besieges Adam and Eve under the apple tree, they are surrounded by a variety of animals that have also been exquisitely painted in enamel, radial time indication in the lower half with Roman hours, Arabic fifteen minutes and inner date numerals, an unusual feature in a verge watch.
