Silver cylinder watch attributed to Moijse Gevril & Fils

A very rare Swiss silver open faced cylinder pocket watch, circa 1800-1895. Full plate movement with an early oscillating weight winding mechanism and a steel cylinder escapement. White enamel regulator dial, small radial time indication in the lower half with Roman hours, outer minute divisions and Arabic five minutes, an outermost seconds track with Arabic numerals, center seconds, monochrome enamel floral decoration and gold hands. A later plain case, maker’s mark LN.

Moyse Gevril & Fils was founded by Moyse Gevril (or Moÿse Gevrille). He was born in 1749 in Le Locle, Switzerland as the son of Jacques Gevril. Moyse lived in Crêt Vaillant near Le Locle. In 1784, he became a master watchmaker and made pocket watches with automatic winding using a swing weight winding mechanism. He died around 1791.
