Silver and rose gold spherical watch by Joseph Bockh

A museum quality Austrian silver and rose gold astronomical verge pocket watch, circa 1700/1890. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, a verge escapement and three arm iron balance. Gold plated dial with engraved foliage, three applied silver chapter rings for the date, an hour display and ages of the moon with a central blued steel disc showing a golden moon and stars, further three openings with vignettes for the planets of the day, the months with their length and the times of the day with changing skies. An unusual later case in the shape of a celestial sphere with rose gold constellation appliqués and their names in very fine repoussé work, the band is adorned with rose gold signs of the zodiac, the detachable bezel with engraved crescents and full moons, as well as raised rose gold stars and small sun spheres, signed Cochin on the central golden crescent moon on the hinged lid. Movement signed. Comes with a contemporary leather covered transport case in the shape of a horseshoe with gold embossing and velvet lining.

Although the silver spherical case was not produced until the late 19th century, it is uniquely suited to the watch’s purpose of depicting celestial events.

Master repoussé artist Daniel Cochin came from Geneva, Switzerland and worked as a medalist, engraver and maker of watch cases between 1732 and 1768. He was considered one of the best in the field of repoussé technique. His extremely artistic work is characterized by the use of many figures.

The Linz watchmaker Joseph Bockh (or Pockh, Pökh, Pokh, Böckh, Pok) was born around 1663. He died on November 14th, 1721 at only 58.
