Silver large open faced pocket watch

A large, high quality English silver open faced pocket chronometer made by William Reid in London, circa 1803. The key wind brass full plate movement with chain and fusee, a spring chronometer escapement, Z shaped bimetallic chronometer balance with two screws and two trapezoidal sliding weights, free swinging blued cylindrical balance spring with end curves on both side and a chatoned capstone on balance. Off-white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, outer minute divisions, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and blued moon hands. The case with maker’s mark DW. Dial signed and numbered, case numbered, movement signed and numbered.

Very little is known about the London based watchmaker William Reid. He had his shop in Ball Alley, Lombard Street. In March 1830, he declared bankruptcy.

The stamp “DW” in the case could indicate the case maker Daniel Willmott, who was active around 1810. However, a similar stamp was used by Daniel Walker. He is recorded as a case maker in 1798, 1799 and 1802.
