Silver open faced centre seconds pocket watch by Thomas Aspinwall

A very fine English pair cased verge pocket watch with rare centre seconds, circa 1760. There are two cases. The outer case is silver and polished with a D*B punch mark from the case maker and a large lateral hinge. The inner case is also silver and polished, with the same D*B punch mark from the case maker and a signed movement protection cap. The dial is enamel with radial Roman numerals, a centre second hand and gold Poker and beetle hands. The signed full plate movement is keywind and fire gilt, with applied engraved ornaments and conical movement pillars, a chain/fusee, a lateral steel stop lever, and a three-arm steel balance. The balance cock is finely florally engraved, pierced with a mascaron.

Centre seconds watches of the period are rare. Most were made with cylinder escapements, but this one is rare in having a verge.
