Silver verge with automaton by Gedeon Rigaud

A rare and one of the earliest English silver open faced verge watch with automaton, circa 1700. Verge movement, splendid cock with mascaron. Champlevé dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes, an aperture at 6, underneath the rotating automaton with five polychrome enamel portraits of aristocrats. Plain case, the back with lock disc, the pendant with a mechanism for activating the automaton, case maker’s mark TR. Case numbered, dial signed, movement signed and numbered.

This watch is one of the earliest automatons. Only one other similar watch is known, also signed Rigaud, with six rotating enamel pictures, this one with Christian representations, same case maker and number 5060.
