James McCabe mainly made pocket watches for which he used various different escapements, but finally, he specialized in duplex escapements. He separated his pocket watches and chronometers into three quality and price categories. To distinguish them, he used different signatures:
1. James McCabe for the highest quality watches;
2. McCabe for the medium quality watches;
3. Beatson for watches of daily use.
McCabe was appointed to the Clockmakers’ Company on April 2nd, 1781, together with 37 others, including Emery, Frodsham, Pinchbeck and Vulliamy. From April 1787, he was a full member of the guild. He became a Junior Warden in January 1809 and two years later, in July 1811, a Senior Warden.
