Gilt metal verge pocket watch by Cornelius Mellin

An early English gilt metal oval verge pendant watch, circa 1615. Full plate movement, verge escapement, decoratively pierced and engraved pinned on balance cock and foot, ratchet and click set up, fusee and gut line, baluster pillars. The oval dial with an engraved scene of a walled city with a windmill, a chapter ring with Roman numerals, the outer edge with scrolling foliage and a winged cherub above 12 o’clock, a double ended steel hand with a foliate head. The cover with a later rock crystal aperture probably added before 1630, engraved masks of animal heads and exotic birds within flowers and foliage on the band, the back decorated to match, a winged hourglass to the base and winding aperture with sliding cover.

This watch is an early example of one made by Cornelius Mellin (also Dewmellin), 1568-1622, Blackfriars, London. Originally a Frenchman, a master who had four apprentices and six journeymen. An alarm verge watch by Mellin is now at the British Museum.
