Gold triple cased repeater
–
A very fine English gold triple cased quarter repeating verge pocket watch with fine repoussé scene by Henry Manly, circa 1745. Fire gilded full plate movement with a verge escapement, decoratively pierced and engraved masked balance cock, diamond endstone, fusee and chain, round baluster pillars and repeating on a bell. White enamel dial with Roman hours, an outer minute track, Arabic five minute numerals and blued steel beetle & poker hands. The inner case with a winding square on the reverse above the engraved star decoration, an engraved landscape below the stem with trees and buildings, the band is pierced and engraved depicting birds, dolphin heads, a squirrel, foliage and a grotesque mask at 6 o’clock, marked JG for James Gray or TG for Thomas Goore, the back of the middle case with a repoussé scene depicting a classical wedding signed Manly F for Henry Manly, and the bezels foliate pierced and engraved, an outer gilt metal case covered with shagreen and both bezels decorated with studs. The inner case is numbered and the movement signed Godfrie Poy London.

Godfrie Poy is recorded working in London from 1718 to 1753. A clock by Godfrie was said to be made for King George II whilst he was still Prince of Wales. A further clock by Poy was amongst the collection of the Tsar of Russia at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.

Henry Manly (1698-circa 1773) was active between 1730 and 1760. He was a celebrated engraver and chaser. Manly, like his contemporaries, depicted the trope of the Classical Wedding.
