Gold watch with tri-colour gold monogram

A fine and rare American 14K gold and stone-set hunting cased keyless lever pocket watch, circa 1890. Royal House of Karadjordjevic by Elgin National Watch Co, U.S.A. A polished case, the hinged and sprung front cover with applied varicoloured gold engraved foliate monogram beneath a Byzantine crown set with red, blue and green stones, the back cover with an applied gold coat of arms beneath a crown set with green and blue stones. Hinged gold cuvette.

White enamel dial with radial Roman hours beneath silver arcades, an outer minute track with Arabic five-minute numerals, subsidiary seconds, the centre painted with a further coat of arms and Louis XV hands. A frosted gilt full plate movement, 17 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, adjusted, blued steel Breguet balance spring, regulator with micrometre screw adjustment. Dial and movement signed.

The coat of arms is almost identical to those of Peter 1st of Serbia but with different supporters and mottos. The Byzantine crown suggests that the watch was made for a member of the Yugoslav Royal House of Karadjordjevic.
