George William Cardinal Mundelein (1872-1939)
Mundelein, who was of German descent, served as third Archbishop of Chicago from 1915 until his death. In 1924 Pope Pius XIappointed him a cardinal with the titular church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome. Mundelein was the first cardinal west of the Allegheny Mountains. Mundelein was considered a moderate theologian; he was a friend of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and backed Roosevelt’s New Deal. Mundelein stood up for social issues and supported the missionary Edward Galvin in his work in China. His pastoral work concentrated on bringing together different ethnic groups in congregations and he became well-known for his “paper hanger speech”, in which he criticized Hitler and his followers (hinting at Hitler’s alleged early job as a wallpaperer).

Mundelein’s coat of arms and motto
The shield shows the letters AM (Ave Maria) in field 1, a star (a Marian symbol) in field 2; in field 3 are three bees adopted from the coat of arms of the Barberini (a family of the Italian nobility – their palace in Romehoused facilities of the Pontificial University where Mundelein had studied). Field 4 shows a crown and the word Humilitas (humility in the Magnificat). His coat of arms express Mundelein’s strong Marian devotion. Behind the shield stands the metropolitan bishop’s patriarchal cross with mitre and pastoral staff. Above is the red galero (the cardinal’s hat) with 15 tassels on each side. Below the shield is the motto: Dominus adjutor meus.
