An English yellow gold and enamel open faced pre hairspring verge pocket watch, circa 1640. Gilt full plate verge movement signed Henry Grendon London, tapering pilasters, scrolling blued steel brackets for the worm and wheel set-up, finely pierced and engraved balance cock. White enamel chapter ring with Roman hours and half-hour markers, the centre with a polychrome enamel portrait of a lady, a single hand. A polychrome enamelled case depicting a wedding breakfast, the interior with an enamel scene of a house and gardens.

In 1640, Henry Grendon was working as a Free Brother prior to his admission to the Clockmakers’ Company. He was made an Assistant in 1646, but there is no later record of him, probably because of the Civil War and its effects. There is a watch by Henry Grendon in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
