Gold, enamel and pearl-set open faced watch by Ferdinand Berthoud

A fine French gold, enamel and pearl-set open faced cylinder pocket watch, circa 1780. Hinged gilt brass full plate movement with hexagonal baluster pillars, fusee with chain, cylinder escapement, three-arm steel balance, flat balance spring, pierced and foliate chased continental type balance cock with polished steel end-piece, silver regulation dial. White enamel dial with blue Roman numerals, outer minute track and red Arabic five-minute numerals, winding aperture at two o’clock and original pierced gold hands. Split-pearl-set bezel, pendant and bow, the case back decorated with a finely painted on enamel scene of Cupid being comforted by Venus in a woodland setting, split-pearl-set border. Dial and movement signed.
