Gold open faced key wound verge watch
–
A fine French 18 carat yellow gold and enamel open faced pocket watch made by Vauchez in Paris, late 18th century. This watch has a mechanical key wound movement featuring a traditional verge escapement with a chain and fusee system, signed Vauchez à Paris on the plate. The white enamel dial shows black Roman numerals for the hours, a outer minute track with Arabic five minute markers, and steel hands. The dial bears a crisp Vauchez signature above the centre and A Paris beneath the centre.

The timepiece is housed in an elaborately decorated three body open faced case, engraved K / 1818 at the eyelet, featuring a distinctive rope twist patterned bezel. The solid gold back cover is beautifully decorated with a vibrant orange brown translucent guilloché enamel ground, intricately painted with a central grayscale enamel landscape miniature depicting a country house or castle with trees, further framed by a blue champlevé enamel border and a delicate green and white enamelled floral vine scroll. The watch mechanism is accessed via a hinge at the bezel, attached to a classic pendant stem and a sturdy round suspension bow. The watch is accompanied by a matching yellow gold pocket watch chain with a swivel clasp and a matching winding key.
