Unique and large pair cased pocket watch by M. J. DeBy

An almost as new, unique and large, Belgian, quarter repeating gentleman’s pocket watch with verge escapement and Jacquemart “à quatre couleur”, circa 1820.
Two cases: a protective case – 18 Carat gold, tiered and à goutte; inner case – 18 Carat gold, the back lid with punched and engraved four coloured gold figures depicting Diana, the goddess of the hunt and Venus, the goddess of love.
Enamel dial with Arabic numerals, the octagonal section with 2 bell-ringing gold figures “à quatre couleur” against an engine-turned and cobalt blue enamelled background with engraved gold foliage. On the left is a torch-bearing putto, on the right is the personification of science, a florally engraved border and blued Breguet hands. A fire gilt full plate movement, key wind, with applied engraved ornaments, two hammers, two gongs, chain/fusee and ring balance.

M.J. Deby (DeBy),
his first name Joseph, was born in Herve, Wallonia, in Belgium. He was the son of Mathie Deby, a watchmaker in the small town, some 25 kilometres east of Liège. Deby moved to the university city of Leuven, in the Flemish Brabant province. There he became master watchmaker on the 26th of October 1794.
