A French gold enamel verge pocket watch, circa 1781.
An 18 carat gold, enamel case, enamel dial, arabic numerals, decorative hands, full plate movement, chain/fusee, three-arm brass balance.
An extremely charming, thin pocket watch of outstanding quality; the back is decorated with cobalt blue enameling on engine turned pattern and a central medallion with en grisaille painting: Alexander the Great meets Clio, the muse of history. The bezels on both sides are decorated with opalescent white enamel foliage and gold paillon tendrils on a cobalt blue ground. The pendant is similarly ornamented.
