Pink gold hunting cased keyless lever watch by H.R. Ekegren
–
A fine Danish pink gold hunting cased perpetual calendar minute repeating keyless lever watch, circa 1900. The timepiece features a damascened movement with a lever escapement, jewelled to the centre, a bimetallic compensation balance, and two polished steel hammers that repeat on coiled gongs. It has a white enamel dial with Roman numerals, an outer minute ring, four sunken subsidiary dials for the date, day, and seconds combined with an aperture for moon phases, a month combined with a leap year indication, blued steel hands, and is signed H. R. Ekegren.
–
The 18 carat gold case is adorned with chased and engraved flowers and foliage, milled borders, a vacant cartouche to the front, and musical trophies at the centre of the back. It also includes a repeating slide to the band, calendar adjusters for day, month, date, and moon phases beneath the bezel, a pusher beside the pendant for hand setting, a glazed cuvette, a milled bezel, a fancy-form gold pendant and bow, and a case back stamped J*J within a cartouche and numbered.

The movement runs smoothly and consistently. The calendar appears to be advancing correctly, but it has not been tested for differing lengths of months. The dial has been restored well in soft enamel, with hairline cracks still visible on the day and month dials. The case is in good condition, with light scuffs and scratches. The decoration on the covers remains clear and well defined.

Henri Robert Ekegrèn was a Danish watchmaker born in Copenhagen in 1823, the son of watchmaker Daniel Ekegrèn. He gained experience working for several well-known watchmakers before establishing his own business in Geneva in 1857. Initially, he co-founded Ekegren & Westermann but later continued the business under the name H.R. Ekegren after his partner Ferdinand Westermann left in 1862.
–
Ekegrèn’s company achieved recognition for its high-quality Geneva watches, winning numerous gold medals at world exhibitions and excelling in the chronometer competition in Geneva. In 1891, Ekegrèn sold his business to E. Koehn but continued working for the company until his passing. The company continued to produce watches under the name H.R. Ekegren and supplied timepieces to prestigious clients such as Tiffany & Co.
–
Ekegrèn’s contributions to horology were significant, including the development of a patented oil for timepieces. His reputation as a watchmaker was further solidified by receiving a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1867, as well as in Vienna in 1873, Philadelphia in 1876, and Paris in 1878. He also served as the watchmaker to the King of Denmark.
–
The company was located in Geneva on Quai Général-Guisan 26, near Patek Philippe. Today, the location houses a Chanel store, with Bucherer and Hermès nearby. Henri Robert Ekegrèn passed away in 1896 at the age of 72.
