Founded in 1883 on the initiative of the most renowned manufacturers and distributors of the time, Union Horlogère was originally a joint Swiss collaboration, to make joint purchases and establish a network of distributors around the world. By 1890, the company established itself in the watchmaking city of Bienne and in 1917 was located in Rue de l’Union. Around 1909, the company founded the Präcisions-Uhrenfabrik Alpina Glashütte G.m.b.H. in Glashütte and from 1912 manufactured precision pocket watches with very high-quality Swiss movements under the signature ‘Präcisions-Uhrenfabrik Alpina Glashütte i/S’. The movements were completed with the typical Glashütte quality features, such as the engraved balance cock, the spiral attachment, the compensation balance with gold screws, the swan-neck adjustment and the gold lever with hidden stones. The Genevan company Duret & Colonnaz supplied the very high-quality movements. Around 1912, the first ‘Chronometer Alpina’ was completed in Glashütte.

The Glashütte Alpina pocket watches have the following special features, which identify them as Glashütte products and clearly distinguish them from similar Swiss Alpina watches:

Glashütte gold anchor with hidden anchor stones;
Glashütte engraved balance cock with swan neck fine adjustment;
Glashütte gold anchor wheel;
compensation balance with Breguet spiral and typical Glashütte spiral attachment;
inscription ‘Glashütte’ on the spring house bridge;
inscription on the enamel dial ‘Precision Watch Factory Alpina Glashütte i/S’.
