A fine 18 carat gold English keywind full hunter pocket watch presented to James Carroll Robinson, circa 1850. Model: Railway Timekeeper. Gilt full plate, cut and compensated bimetallic balance, diamond endstone,
White enamel dial, black Roman numerals, black outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6, black and white image of James Lewis Carroll Robinson at 3, blued steel Fleur-De-Lys hands. Polished hinged case with engraved decoration of a train to the front and foliate decoration throughout, presentation inscription to the cuvette, inner dust cover. Dial & movement signed, case stamped P&R N.Y.

James Carroll Robinson (1823-1886) was born in Paris, Edgar County, Illinois and was raised in Clark County where he received a limited formal education. He served in the US Army as a corporal during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and later attended law school prior to becoming a lawyer in Marshall, Illinois in 1850. He went on to serve as a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives from 1859 to 1865 and from 1871 to 1875 and ran for the Governor of Illinois against Republican Richard James Oglesby in 1864.
