Silver pair-cased verge pocket watch

A fine, early English, repoussé silver pair-cased pocket watch with a single hand, circa 1690. A repoussé outer case, decorated in relief with a central scene within a rocaille scroll border signed Cochin F. Inner case, polished, deep back, split bezel, loose ring pendant. Silver-champlevé dial with radial Roman numerals and inner half and quarter-hour divisions, the centre decorated with scrolls and the signature cartouches. Fleur-de-lys steel hour pointer.
A hinged, gilt brass full plate movement with divided Egyptian pillars, fusée and chain, verge escapement, plain steel three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass winged cock pierced and engraved with foliage. Dial and movement signed.

Daniel Quare A very celebrated maker of clocks and watches who invented repeating for watches in about 1680. He was born in 1649, became free of the Clockmakers Company in 1671, master in 1708 and died in 1724. Daniel Cochin A master engraver in Geneva in 1732, specialized in repoussé work and chasing. His work, particularly skilful, is noted for its use of many figures. Did he sign as follows: Cochin, Cochin F., or Cochin Fecit.
