Gold watch for the Chinese market
–
A rare astronomical coach watch made for the Chinese market by William Pybus in London, England, circa 1780. This double sided pocket watch has a unique design with jewel settings on both sides. Its face has a white enamel dial with Roman hours, an outer minute/second track for the center seconds, outermost Arabic five minute numerals and gold poker & beetle hands. The reverse has a decentralized time display at 12 o’clock, features a rare combination of a solar calendar for the European market and a lunar calendar for the Chinese market and below a regulating scale, you’ll further find elegant gold hands. The movement has a verge escapement. This timepiece includes an unusual and rare calendar mechanism that switches every 12 hours for half a day.
The back of the watch is signed.
