Pocket watch with extreme high relief
–
An early repoussé double case verge clock with extreme high relief, made by James Thornton in London, England, circa 1771. This clock has an outer case that features fantastic repoussé work with extreme high relief, depicting a mythological scene with the goddess Diana. The case is made of at least 18 Carat gold and possibly even 20 Carat gold. The clock’s original Dutch watch paper adds to its allure, while the inner case is smooth and understated. The London Hallmarks of 1771 authenticate its origin and age, making it a valuable collector’s item. The clock’s enamel dial, known as a “Dutch Dial”, is typical of English watches intended for the Dutch market. It is in remarkably good condition and has been well preserved over the years. The gold plated hands are also original.
The movement is signed and numbered and has a verge escapement. Verge movements were popular in the 17th and 18th centuries and were known for their accuracy and reliability.

James Thornton
James Thornton was a notable watchmaker who operated in London in the late 18th century. He was known for his high quality watches and was a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers. While there is limited information available about his specific impact on the watchmaking industry, it is likely that his work helped to advance the craft and improve the reputation of London as a centre for fine watchmaking. His watches are highly sought after by collectors today, and his legacy continues to influence the world of horology.
