A remarkable and extremely rare English oval 18K gold, enamel and pearl-set centre seconds verge pocket watch with 12-hour power reserve made for the Chinese market, circa 1790. Cornelia, daughter of Africanus, mother of the Gracchi, is regarded as one of the most important women in the second century BC Rome.
The case back with an oval polychrome enamel scene, a very fine miniature painting of Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi, champlevé enamel and pearl-set rim, translucent red and cobalt blue on an engine-turned ground, opaque light blue and gold, the pendant with red and blue enamel. White enamel dial with radial Roman hours and outer minute divisions, centre seconds, 12-hour power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, serpent hands. Fire gilt full plate oval movement, key-winding, chain/fusee, solid movement pillars, duplex escapement, three arm brass balance, fine florally engraved balance cock, rack regulator, chatoned diamond endstone on the balance. Dial signed, movement signed and numbered.
