Gold watch with engraved portrait of George Washington
–
A fine English gold watch with an engraved portrait of George Washington, circa 1824.
This commemoration watch was crafted by M.I. Tobias and Company of Liverpool, specifically for the U.S. market to honour the 25th anniversary of George Washington’s passing. The gilded movement lever escapement showcases the expert craftsmanship that went into its creation. The bezels are elegantly engraved with scrolled foliage, while the back features a stunning portrait of George Washington. The hinged gold cuvette and enamel dial are further testaments to the watch’s exceptional quality and attention to detail.

MI Tobias & Co was founded in Liverpool in 1810 by Meyer Isaac Tobias (also known as Michael) and existed until 1829. Meyer Isaac was previously a business partner to Morris Tobias at M. Tobias & Co. London and Liverpool. Morris Tobias was the uncle of Meyer Isaac. In Liverpool, the company was recorded at No. Poole Lane. 5. There are also watches signed with Lord Streert. The watch shown has a Swiss movement and is probably a Swiss counterfeit for export. The engraving namely also Wrong MJ Tobias instead of MI Tobias. Real watches by Meyer Isaac Tobias are based on the English construction, often with an escapement invented by Edward John Massey. He exported many clocks to America and died in New York in 1838.
