Pocket watch “mourning case” with souvenirs
–
An exquisite English gold enamel pocket watch with a very early anchor escapement, “mourning case” with souvenirs, surrounded by oriental pearls and diamonds, made by Robert Preston in London, England, circa 1790. The open faced case is of English top quality, has London gold hallmark and master’s mark IN, a very rare case decoration, set with large oriental pearls on both sides, blue guilloché enamel on the reverse, on which the glazed central part containing a lock of hair, again surrounded by small oriental pearls and a wreath set with small diamond roses, the so called mourning decoration. The white enamel dial has an inner ring with Arabic numerals for the hours and presumably original, golden arrow hands. The movement is highly interesting, has a very early English lever escapement similar to the Massey escapement, an exceptionally large diamond cover stone and an artistically engraved plate.
