Gold half quarter repeating cylinder watch

An English fine 18 carat gold key wind open face half quarter repeating pocket watch with historical interest having been owned by Charles Waring Darwin, circa 1822. Gilt full plate movement, cylinder escapement, plain 3-arm balance, two polished hammers striking on two gongs.
White enamel dial, black Roman numerals, black outer minute track, subsidiary seconds at 6, gilt hands.
Engine-tuned consular case. Dial and movement signed, case stamped R.D.

Colonel Charles Waring Darwin was a British solider and landowner. A second cousin once removed of naturalist Charles Darwin, his father changed the family name from Rhodes to Darwin in 1850 in order to inherit Elston Hall from his brother in law.

Darwin entered the British Army in 1873. By the time he left service he had seen active service in the Second Boer War, where he was awarded the service medal with 3 clasps.
